Cadillac says the new Electric Vehicle will be the beginning of a fleet of EV models.

Cadillac shocked many in the auto industry, introducing their new all-electric model Friday. This came as Ford revealed their new 2020 Explorer on the same day.

All this occurred, with automakers revealing futuristic driver technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Also, the NAIAS Auto Show begins full-scale this week.

Cadillac captured everyone's attention.

While industry auto shows can be known for wowing audiences with concept cars—which could or could not reach production. The Cadillac EV crossover vehicle will be the future now.

General Motors has committed to an "all-electric future."

The Cadillac EV, which still hasn't been named, will be built upon GM's new EV platform. The EV platform will allow GM engineers to build new models with much less effort.

GM’s EV platform will be flexible, allowing the company to respond quickly to customer preferences with relatively short design and development lead time. Overall, Cadillac will introduce new models at the rate of roughly one every six months through 2021.

The most advanced components within this platform are the drive units and battery cells, both of which are being designed for maximum usability throughout GM vehicle lineups in different countries. The EVs can be configured in front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, and the output of their battery systems will be adjustable based on vehicle and customer needs.

Not only has GM introduced the future of Cadillac, but seemingly a new model for automakers in an increasingly competitive EV auto industry.

With flexibility and common design, GM appears to be avoiding manufacturing and logistic weaknesses of the current automobile manufacturing process.

Expect to see more surprise EV announcements coming from Detroit this week. The future has arrived.
